I recently rediscovered an old nightgown of my mothers - I salvaged it from my father’s purging before he moved from our old home a few years after Mom died. I had no idea what to do with it; at the time, I wasn’t into lingerie and loungewear, and besides - the nightgown had yellowing around the collar and some strange yellowish stains on the chest area.

Last night, I was engaging in some spring cleaning when I came across the nightgown and decided to try my hand at removing these years-old stains. I used three different methods, which I’ll discuss in a separate post, and finally got the gown looking about 80% better.

Now, on to the discussion of the piece itself:

This gown is totally unlike anything else I own, for several reasons. First, it is the only piece of “old” lingerie I have. Second, since it is so feminine, I can only assume it was an item my mother obtained early in her marriage to my father (some 34 years ago), which makes it all the more special.

I suppose in a sense, the labor I put into saving it and cleaning it makes me feel closer to the mother I lost at the age of 15. I never knew my mother as merely a woman like any other woman; I don’t think most daughters truly realize during their adolescence that their mother was once their age, with the same desires and hopes.

All sentimentality aside, this piece is gorgeous on, even if it appears lackluster off:

I am in love with the buttons and embroidery on this item, and these elements make it truly unique in my collection.

As you can see in this picture, there is definitely still some yellowing around the cuffs and one of the shoulders, but believe me when I say it is so much better than before (I should have taken some ‘before’ photos, but it didn’t occur to me). I am surprised that this gown fit me as well as it did - my mother was 117 lbs and a size 4-6 when she was married, and I currently clock in somewhere around 150 lbs and a solid size 8, but this baby fits like it was made for me.

Curiously, there is no label, and it doesn’t appear to have ever had one, so I have no idea whether it was manufactured or handmade.

Regardless, this stain-removing project has educated me further on lingerie care in addition to bringing me closer to my mother.

So in honor of May, the month of mothers, go hug yours if you can.

The Best Bra I've Ever Had

The Fauve Isobel Bra in Aubergine.

Purchased from Brastop for $28.78

Almost a year after purchase, this is what it looks like in person:

(Maybe one day there will be photos of me WEARING these items, but I’ll work up to that.)

Naturally, the reality of this bra is a fair bit different from the Photoshopped-to-perfection model picture, but I’ll go through the pros and cons of this lovely bra for a balanced review:

Pros: Of course, I might be a little biased because this is the first bra that ever fit me properly, a UK size 34 F (US 34 DDD/E). The straps are wider at this size, and gives the perfect amount of support needed by the straps - that is to say, not much - and stay in place after adjustment.

After a year of wear, the band itself has not stretched out much - I have it on the second hook now, as opposed to the loosest. It is incredibly comfortable for all-day wear, and breathes nicely.

Extra perk: really lovely cleavage that comes naturally, as the bra is unpadded.

Cons: There is a bit of fading on the sides, at the underarms. I’m not entirely certain if this is caused by the general wear and tear, or if it’s been stained or damaged by my deodorant. There is a bit of embroidery that has pulled free on the back clasp, but that is easily repaired with a needle and thread. The only initial disappointment I has was that the main cup material is rather rougher to the touch than it would appear in the photo. Instead of being a smooth fabric as I anticipated, the cup (except for the decorative side material) is covered in a mesh. After the initial trepidation, though, I quickly adjusted to this development and it no longer bothers me.

One last thing to mention is that this bra does show through a lot of shirts, mainly due to the embroidery. If you’re like me, you won’t really care about this, but it is something that many women worry about, so it is necessary to include in a review.

Main point: I LOVE this bra. In fact, in the near future I may purchase myself a spare, in case I need a spare and the line is discontinued. For all I can tell, this bra is a comfortable, fashionable piece at a good value for the quality of material and fit. Definitely recommended!

I got a hefty paycheck this past week, in addition to my tax return, (yay!) so naturally, I ordered a few pieces for…research purposes, of course.

First up,

“Boudoir Blue Set” from Rosebud and Slave, ~~$22.80~~ $14.93 USD

This lovely set is on sale right now, as it’s only available in one size - 36DD. This worked out perfectly for me, as it’s a sister size for me, but obviously could be problematic for some. I’m excited to try it on and review, and so far the customer service has been satisfactory, promptly letting me know that there would be a shipping delay.

Bonus fact: Rosebud and Slave didn’t charge me shipping! I don’t know if it was a glitch on their part, but I only paid the $15 that the set actually cost me.

Next in line,

Ann Summers Peony Nude Body and Ann Summers Peony Black Body ~~$60.82 each~~ $10.63 each!

Easily my best bargain of this round of purchases, I got both the nude and the black bodysuits because hey - my birthday’s in April and why not treat myself to both?

As you can tell in the photo, the nude bodysuit/babydoll combo is higher waisted than the black one, a big reason I had for purchasing both. Based on reviews, the nude is actually closer to a blush pink than a tan, so I shall definitely be taking photos as soon as I get them in the mail!

I’m really curious to see how flattering this will be on me, since it’s sheer and flowy and two totally different styles above and below the waist. It could definitely be a hit or miss item, but at only $10 each, it’s a risk this college kid is willing to take.

And lastly but not leastly,

Vero Moda Alexandra Padded Bra ~~$34.91~~ $20.78 at asos.com.

Regrettably, this bra is out of stock at Asos - I must have snatched up the very last in their stock, but you can also find it here for $31.90 in limited sizes (and elsewhere, if you find it). The matching briefs are also available, and I’m sure I’ll purchase them at a later date.

I was intrigued by the colors and design of this bra. Although the description calls the main color grey, it looks more purple on my computer screen, so I am definitely interested in what it looks like in person. That, along with the pale blue trim and flirty demi-cup, makes this bra an excellent spring pick.

Again, I’ll be sure to write reviews and post pictures of these beauties as soon as they arrive in the mail.

Knickerocker Review

So, for Christmas this past year, I got an Etsy giftcard.

Naturally, my first instinct was to purchase lingerie, and this was the perfect opportunity to finally check out Knickerocker!

What I bought:

Uterus Print Knickers, $25.00

Floral Knickers, $22

First Impressions:

Custom-made knickers for under $30. A STEAL.
Comfy. So comfy. Can I just live in these?
Incidentally, the uterus printed ones served me well on my period, offering ample room for me to tuck my hot water bottle into my waistband and enjoy warmth.
The high waist is so flattering on me - it really enhances the curves of an hourglass figure, though I’m sure it’s just as lovely on all body types. :)
Nicola is SO SWEET, sending me an email to gently remind me that I’d forgotten to give her my measurements for the knickers.

All in all, I would definitely recommend Knickerocker! They’re well worth the money you spend on them, and the customer service is exceptional!
